I found this nifty little reflections check list years ago in an old gardening book a friend had. Will be interesting to see how the answers change from year to year.

Flower Gardens:
Did you use your garden?
No as much as I would have liked. This summer was a rather busy one.
Was there somewhere comfortable to sit and enjoy it?
Not at all, this is something I really want to work on next year.
Did your plants look healthy and happy overall?
Yes, with the good soil conditions and new mulch everything looked much happier this year. Plus, finally having a garden hose helped a lot as well.
Which plants thrived?
Coneflower and hydrangea did rather well this year.
Which didn’t?
The poor hostas had a rough year, which is a bit of a shock since they are usually pretty hearty.
Any diseases?
Nope, everything was rather healthy this year in that department.
Which insects/pests caused a ruckus?
Slug! I just couldn’t keep them away from the hostas! Next year I’ll have to brew up some dandelion tea to help with that.
Which plants were too hard to maintain?
Surprisingly, the hostas were the hardest. Not happy at all in their locations, problems with slugs, I’ll have to move them next year.
Were there spots or periods when nothing was blooming?
Yes, I tend to favour late summer blooming plants. This is something I’d like to work on next year.
Which plant groupings worked well together?
Purple coneflower and brown-eyed Susan always look lovely together.
Which part of the garden was your favourite?
There are gardens surrounding the entire house which are all growing rather lovely, but my favourite is the garden along the drive way. Partial shade, it thrives the most and is lovely for guests to see first thing.
Which aspects drove you crazy with frustration?
Crabgrass! Since the gardens are still rather young, and I busy with other things this summer, the crabgrass went wild. And slugs, little buggers! My poor hostas!
My plant wish list for next year includes:
More early bloomers and a clematis.
Next year the following perennials will likely need dividing?
Nothing to divide next year. Everything’s still rather young/small.
My next big garden project is to?
Hopefully, two big projects in the works for next year:
First, we have a rather large side yard (about 4 acres) which I’d like to transform into a meadow. I can already see it in my mind! To encourage birds and bees is the plan. This winter I’ll be doing a lot of research and planning! Second, we have a berm that separates us from our neighbour on the east side. Right now it is rather over grown there. Next year I’d love to clean it all up and plant wild flowers there…or maybe hostas and poppies? I’ll have to do some thinking on that one.
Garden regrets?
Just not having enough time! I hope to change that next year.
