Dear Old Man Winter

Did we miss fall? Seems like the weather changed from warm and sunny to cold and grey overnight. Yesterday Barrie, ON (about 4 hours away) had snow! In October! I can’t remember that happening since I was a little girl.

Dare I say that dreaded 6-letter word that everyone dislikes so much? Winter…that’s right, winter…coming to a city near you! Break out your toque!

It’s damp blustery days like these that remind me of the grosser side to winter. Don’t get me wrong I do enjoy winter. I enjoy winter right up until about February. When the beautiful white fluffy snow turns into rotten, freezing, rainy weather I’d rather just stay in bed, under the covers until the coast is clear.

Knock on wood, Old Man Winter is kinder to us this year and doesn’t send us a repeat of what we had this past April. We were without power for 2 full days and lost several tree in that episode.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could write a letter to Old Man Winter, like leaving a comment card at a restaurant or store? Mine would read something like this:

To: Old Man Winter
CC: Mother Nature

Dear Sir, Madame,

A beautiful winter wonderland would be lovely, especially for Christmas. But freezy rainy weather is really unappreciated and, frankly, downright unacceptable. Our trees really can’t withstand much more weather like that! Please consider keeping the nastiness to a minimum.

In return, I pledge to continue to feed the birds, plant new trees whenever possible and not complain so much about the colder weather…okay, maybe not so much on that last one – but I will try my very best with it!

Thank you in advance,
Concerned Citizen

  1. I know we had snow the other day! It was a heavy snow and it made all my grasses bend to the ground like the middle of winter with snow all over them. I am not ready either.
I love the pictures of your space, beautiful and peaceful, until a poor tree can’t stand up to those heavy snows..and icy rains!…..I will curl up with a cup of hot tea to wait this early snow out…hmm..indian summer may be here for a visit soon:-)

    • Winter is definitely just around the corner…here, we’ve had temps dipping below zero the past few nights. Thank you so much, we are very fortunate to have found this gem, we are so in love with our home/land. The yard has so much potential…like a blank canvas. Curling up sounds wonderful…only if I could hibernate until spring, that would be oh so lovely! :)
