Not too long ago this past summer, we had our first hands-on experience with squirrels. We’ve always had a lot of them zipping around the property, but usually, they go their way – we go ours.
This particular day, Dan was hanging out in the shop, a teeny-tiny little black baby squirrel went zipping by the door. This little guy was no bigger than a minute! Dan caught the little one and brought him up to the house to show us. E was especially interested in the little fellow as we were reading books about squirrels and their shenanigans.
Of course, I was worried that our cat Halle would find him and make him a snack; we made him a little nest in an old wooden birdcage and he spent with the night with the chickens.
The next day after work, Dan was heading back to the shop when a teeny-tiny little grey baby squirrel ran right up to him and sat on his boot (I saw it with my own eyes, it was the cutest thing ever!). Now we have two squirrels!! So in with the sibling, he went. The two of them spent the night with the chickens.

Considering they were so little, no sign of their mama and knowing Halle would surly make them lunch, the following day I arranged a ride for them to Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre just outside of Napanee, Ontario https://sandypineswildlife.org/. There, they would be safe and taken care of until they were big enough to survive the wild alone.
A few days after I was walking out to the shop, a much older squirrel (but still a youngin) came running out of the bush at me like I was Snow White in the forest! I took one look at him and said “get the heck back in the woods!”. And with a flick of his tail, he was gone. Haha!

So cute when they are small…but look out lol
