I was having a difficult time with dry, red facial skin and had tried many creams on the market to no avail. A friend suggested trying jojoba or almond oil mixed with lavender and cedarwood essential oils. Always willing to try new concoctions involving oils, I gave it the old college try. So I mixed up a small batch and started using it as my daily moisturizer.
After a few months, still not overly happy with the outcome, I turned to Pinterest in search of a recipe for a DIY moisturizer with essential oils. Of course, there were tons of choices, but which one was right for me?
With a lot of research under my belt, I decided on two recipes with shea butter as the base, combined the two and came up with something to try. I started the hunt to purchase the shea butter; not an easy feat during Covid lockdown. I purchased shea butter from Amazon (I’d prefer supporting local, not in the cards this time). The rest of the ingredients I conveniently had.
At this time, I’d like to note use caution when trying any essential oils. Be careful of possible skin sensitivity. Keep out of reach of children. If you are pregnant, nursing, or under a doctors’ care, consult your physician. Avoid contact with eyes, inner ears, and sensitive areas.
DIY Natural Face Moisturizer
1/2 cup shea butter
1-tablespoon almond oil (or jojoba oil)
1-tablespoon fractionated coconut oil
10 drops lavender essential oil
10 drops cedarwood essential oil
- Add shea butter, almond oil, and coconut oil to a glass bowl.
- Set the glass bowl over a pot of boiling water to create a double boiler. Melt all ingredients together.
- Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly.
- Add in essential oils, stir together.
- Place in freezer for 20 – 25 mins until almost solid.
- Use a hand mixer to whip ingredients for 10 – 15 mins until the desired consistency. (Mine whipped up nicely)
- Store in an airtight container.
Use sparingly; applying too much will look and feel oily. I find it best used after a shower or before bed.

Why I used the essential oils I did, aside from smelling wonderful:
Lavender – With a distinct powdery, floral aroma, the lavender flower has been in use for centuries. The lavender essential oil can be used topically for skin, aromatically for its peaceful and restful floral aroma. The soothing topical properties of lavender essential oil make it a popular option for skincare products and at-home skincare DIYs. It is known to cleanse, nourish and soothe dry skin.
Cedarwood – Cedarwood essential oil provides ample benefits as it’s known for its rich colour and warm woody scent. Cedarwood has a grounding aroma that can evoke a feeling of wellness and vitality; used for its clarifying properties improving skin imperfections when applied topically. Also, cedarwood is a fantastic treatment for acne and redness.
I must say I’m pretty happy with the outcome; it makes a great, fluffy product. And it smells delicious! I’ve been using this for a month now the results are fantastic. Dryness and redness aren’t an issue anymore. And my skin is silky smooth and glowing. Definitely worth a try!

P.S. Next time I’ll omit the coconut oil and double the almond, just for fun.
