Gordon, The Great

I will always fondly remember my first rooster, Gordon (Ameraucana); he was hand raised, in my first-ever batch of homegrown chicks, in the spring of 2019. He was such a cute chick – of course, we didn’t know he was a rooster until the day he crowed several weeks after arrival, haha.

Gordon was majestic (maybe I’m biased as his chicken mother). His colouring was so breathtaking. His beautiful black beard, his yellow cape feathers and his shimmery black/blue tail feathers. Man, in the chicken world, he was a hunk, haha.

We decided, sadly, that we couldn’t have a rooster in our neighbourhood since we all live so close, so we decided to rehome him. Luckily a close friend was in the market for a young rooster and gave Gordon a home a few hours away.

Until he left, Gordon was a joy to have around. I loved to spend time with him. Gordon was friendly but very protective of all the gals; he came at me a few times and ended up meeting the side of my boot! (cheeky bugger). He was cuddly with me too! He would let me pick him up anytime I wanted. He was a good boy.

Gordon ended up moving back to the area this year, so I can visit any time I want. He’s also a father now, haha. So wonderful to see my boy doing well.

Since Gordon, we’ve had seven other roosters, all rehomed. Yep, seven!! (five from 2020 batch of chicks and two in 2021) None as exciting as the first but just as entertaining.

  1. Yes Gordon shares snacks with his ladies, struts all day to ensure they are protected and rarely rests on the roosts in the daytime like the rest of the flock. He is a proud father and keeps a couple of his sons in check, but he still rules the flock. He makes his rounds into the coop to check on the laying ladies and is especially poofy and showy when they announce the arrival of another egg and races in to announce his excitement and then uses his favourite stump to stand proud and loud to announce to the world his kingdom!!!
