Grow Write Guild: My First Plant

My first Hoya

I was 19 years old when I grew my first Hoya. My parents and I had just moved into our new home – which I wasn’t overly excited about since I was in love with our old house (where the three of us had lived for the previous 15+ years). My Grandmother gave me a slip of her Hoya for my new room as a moving in gift. I didn’t know a thing about caring for this plant, or for any plant really, but learned quickly that it was pretty low maintenance.

I have an emotional attachment to my Hoya, which I still have to this day, and when it blooms it brings back wonderful memories of my childhood and the time I spent with my grandparents. The original plant hung in the window at the top of their staircase my entire childhood. I am still drawn to this plant because of its beautiful smell and memories of days gone by.

I love my Hoya – it is one of my most favourite house plants.
