Chicken math is a real thing. You could just count how many chickens you have. But, if you want a more accurate number, you must use chicken math.
According to this method, I have one chicken.

Chicken Math Explained – Calculating Your True Number of Chickens – Farmhouse Guide
Here’s my version:
- 2016 I had four chickens. Sadly, one got eaten by a fox (Rose).
- In spring 2019, I got five chicks. One turned out to be a rooster (Gordon) which I rehomed.
- Two more chickens arrived, adopted from a friend.
- In spring 2020, I picked up seven chicks. Five turned out to be roosters that I rehomed. From that batch, the two chickens left both became a fox’s snack.
- So I bought three more – black ones.
- But some of the old gals don’t lay anymore, so I purchased another two – red ones this time.
- One of the old girls got sick. We had to put her down (and when I say we, I mean my Dad.)
- One flew the coop, literally, and got eaten by a fox.
- In 2021, I picked up five more chicks, so cute! Two of them (surprise, surprise) turned out to be roosters which I rehomed.
- Then I got four ducks.

And that, in a nutshell, is the difference between my math and chicken math. I believe the chicken math method is more accurate; seems like I’ve got room for a few more, haha!

Lost count..lol
